 In recent years, India has emerged as a major player in the global lithium market, thanks in part to the discovery of large lithium deposits in the northern state of Jammu and Kashmir. These deposits are estimated to contain up to 1.6 million tonnes of lithium, making them some of the largest lithium reserves in the world.

The lithium deposits in Jammu and Kashmir were first discovered by the Geological Survey of India (GSI) in 2018. The deposits are located in the Zanskar region of the state, and are believed to be the result of the collision of the Indian and Asian tectonic plates millions of years ago.

The discovery of these lithium deposits is significant for several reasons. First, lithium is a key component in the production of batteries for electric vehicles (EVs), which are becoming increasingly popular around the world as countries seek to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels. The growing demand for lithium has led to a surge in prices, with some analysts predicting that prices could double over the next decade.

Second, the discovery of these lithium deposits in India could help the country reduce its dependence on imported lithium. Currently, India imports almost all of its lithium from countries like China and Australia, which has made it vulnerable to supply disruptions and price volatility.

The government of India has recognized the potential of these lithium deposits, and has taken steps to accelerate their development. In 2021, the Indian government announced plans to set up a joint venture between state-owned companies National Aluminium Company (NALCO) and Hindustan Copper to develop the lithium deposits in Jammu and Kashmir. The joint venture, called Khanij Bidesh India Ltd (KABIL), aims to secure strategic minerals for India's industrial and strategic needs.

One of the key challenges facing the development of these lithium deposits is the remote location of the Zanskar region, which is located in a high-altitude area and is difficult to access. However, the Indian government has expressed its commitment to developing the necessary infrastructure to support the mining and processing of lithium in the region.

Overall, the discovery of large lithium deposits in Jammu and Kashmir is a significant development for India's economy and its efforts to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels. With the global demand for lithium expected to continue to grow, the development of these deposits could provide India with an important strategic advantage in the years to come.
